Eagle Schnapps brings you the tradition & history of Ojude Oba in Ijebu land

The Ijebu people are in the south central of Yoruba land. Contrary to some  people’s belief,  the Ijebus  are not  only found in Ogun state but also in parts of Lagos like Epe , Ejinrin & Ikorodu .They are known for their entrepreneurship and business acumen a fact which is insightful considering the Ijebus can be found in many parts of the world doing business and making money .

Asides from their business acumen, the Ijebus are very sociable people .Like the proverbial character, Jack, they work hard and celebrate well and are known to throw memorable parties. The Regberegbes which are the classes of age grades in Ijebu land are an instrument of social cohesion and mobilization. These Regberegbes form a great part of the story of Ojude Oba.

Blessed Eid 2016, as celebrated.

Few weeks ago, I was reading up on the similarities shared by the Christian and Muslim religious respectively. I got to learn how Christianity and Islam share a lot, from both their identical versions of the creation story, to their accounts of Abraham's existence. I thought had seen enough until I was surprised by the Qur'an's account of Jesus Christ's extraordinary splendour, mentioned as Isa. I learnt a lot from Wikipedia and the whole Internet that day, but I had, yesterday, realized that,  there was one very important fact, Wiki didn't share. That is, both Christians and Muslims are God's children, we all crave for the same things, a good life here on earth and better life after death, and we all love celebrating.

A Country of Political Analysts.

On the last Sunday of the month of June in 2016, I was early enough to make it half way into the Sunday school class. I sincerely can not remember the topic of the Sunday school lecture, but I can remember quite vividly that i heard the words "Buhari" and "Change" more times in a Church environment than I have ever heard before in one place. At some point, I found it hard to differentiate between Church and the newspaper stand at Okokomaiko bus stop.

"That is the change we are all suffering, because we have refused to read our Bible". Unsure of the relationship between the Bible and our now predicament with change in the country, I paid absolute attention to what the Sunday school teacher had to say next. " The book of Proverbs chapter 24 vs 21 made it clear to us not to meddle with people who come to us with change, because their calamity is sudden, just like it is in Nigeria now,  but we refused to listen. Some did not even know that the all knowing God had warned us about APC long before now because they refuse to read their Bibles and understand God. See this Bible " as he raises his very big and 47years old looking Bible over his head to show the whole church, "it is full of empirical facts, the bible will arrest and convict you of your sins, with empirical facts and strong evidence you can't deny, unlike the EFCC under this Buhari man, who arrests you first puts one on media trial, and then scramble for the first piece of evidence lastly. " At this point I left like asking the Sunday school teacher,  if we were still church, but it seemed an unforgivable thing to do, interrupting a man in his zone. Moreover I was enjoying his outburst, it seemed laughable then, his verbal and non verbal expressions, so I just watched him continue.

Executive House of Commotion

Good day Nigeria. You know what they say, "when the cat is away the rats play". While the President was away in London, Minister Rotimi Ameachi and his counterpart, Minister of State Ibe Kachukwu decieded to get into a little public squabble, to flex their muscles,  just because they could.
I watched the video of their little power tussle at the Akwa-Ibom town hall meeting  on YouTube over and over again this past week, and each time,  Rotimi Ameachi's body language appeared to be more flagrant the the already blatant words that fell out of his mouth. Minister Ameachi had always been a loud mouth from time immemorial, he uses words without caution and respect for the recipients of his addresses.

Minister Ibe Kachukwu on the other hand showed character.  His character really impressed me and other Nigerians alike,  according to the views aired on Twitter. However, not too long ago in April, I wrote a piece in respect to the unguarded utterances made by the Minister of State for Petroleum, at a time when fuel scarcity in the country was at its peak, and Nigerians were yearning for answers. The Minister's words then,  seemed unforgivable, but with his recent show of maturity  and respect to the Nigerian populace by standing up for what is right and giving a higher minister a good reply on all our behalf, we not only forgive his earlier excesses, we forget them.

When Change Collides with Education.

The present Buhari Administration promised us "change" during their 2015 campaign.  Judging from the dictionary meaning of the word,  one would have no choice but to agree with Minister Lai Muhammad that this administration is hereby living up to all her promises. Starting from changing the price of tomatoes,  to changing the state of our economy, up to the recent change in our education.

Education in Nigeria is one industry that has collided with change more times than we can remember, since its inception.  Whenever members of the older generation starts reminiscing about the good old days,  I tend to ask a million questions before I get to understand phrases like "... back then in standard one. " or "... before I entered class four".  Even younger members of our society as well succeeds in putting me into confusion nowadays with words like " basic science " and all what not.  I look around our educational system,  and tend not to see a system that gives hope for a better tomorrow, but a system that says "change is constant,  even when Buhari is not President".

Dear PMB... The Change we asked for.

I love this country, and as I said in one of my unpublished piece "what matters is that the President do the job at hand with the best people he thinks he can work with". PMB might not read this piece today or ever, but let me just address my President briefly.
Dear PMB, many Nigerians believe in the change you promised to bring, we are waiting patiently to see these changes affect the price of garri in the market , the price of kerosene, even the price of spicy biscuits and all the other petty things that affects the common man. We are patiently waiting for fuel price to crash, we want see the value of our Naira fly, we want to sleep and wake , sleep and wake again with electricity in our homes. I personally want to be able to wait till the minute am to go out, before I press my cloth, because the power is constant.

10 days in Lagos.

The very corrosive and unpleasantries of the Lagos breeze was the first thing that welcomed me into the Land of my birth after more than 11months of absence. I expected Lagos to miss me after staying that long away from her, I've never stayed 11months aways from Lagos' kisses and hugs. I expected Lagos to jump for joy at the arrival of her beloved son and give me a close hug, some fine girls to play with and kiss, a good job paying stress-free job on the island plus more, however in my very search for a warm embrace from the mega city I mistook the almost warm breeze at berger, for a welcome to the land where "All iz Well" for me and just me, forgetting that the berger breeze is a dish served to all that crosses the very berger border of Ogun state and Lagos state, irrespective of a newbie or a son born and breaded on the very streets of Lagos, in Okokomaiko. I later discovered that Lagos actually missed me, but not in the way I hoped, not in the proud "my long lost soon is back type of way" but in a "where did u go since," "come and continue enjoying the Badagry express way traffic jam" kind of way.
Lagos didn't even allow me to get home before she made me wish I was still back at Awka. Change really swept through my Lagos, in ways pleasant to some and unpleasant to many many more, homes were brought down like hopes, walls and shops were left broken like a heart of someone learning to fall in love in the worst ways. Change came, and I almost lost my way. If only I could loose my way into a good job that pays in big five figures na, iFor like am.
10days in Lagos, she did treat me thus, but I love her still. I love her for her girls, they keep my day fun filled and busy. I love her for my niggas coz they make the thorns of the forest less painful and harmful by just being there and laughing me through the pain. I love Lagos for my family, even tho we are one less person, she still did an awesome job of keeping my fam together. Am not sure anybody will read this, but if you did I just wanted to tell... am in Lagos and tis being 10days already.

Is Nigeria a Developed Country?

      NNAMDI AZKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA

                          Faculty of Arts

Department of English Language and Literature

Name: Chukwuemeka U. Chinyere

Level: 400L

Course title: Language and National development

Course code: Eng 402

Reg no: 2011024036

Lecturer: Prof Nduka.

           Is Nigeria a Developed Country?

Nigeria is a country endowed with several valuable resources, “which at the moment is of no much. relevance to her economy but the pockets of our greedy leaders”. The effect of this mis-management and improper allocation of funds is clearly stated on the walls of our society. Nevertheless that has not given us a complete answer to this topic’s question.

According to Rodgers(1969), a developed country should be able to meet equally these 3various aspects,

(1) Raising the people's standard of living.
(2) Creating a condusive enviroment for the ciziten of that country, to individually grow within.
(3) Increasng options of variety goods and services for the citizen to choose from.
It can be easily said that the Nigerian Government hs fail to really meet up to the standards of a developed country judging by the 3foremention aspects.
A developed country can also be defined as one which has many industries and a diversified economic (in an advanced state). In line with this definition, Nigeria cannot be regarded as a developed country, she has very few and low producing industries, with an epileptic economy.

Nigerian’s do not believe in self-production even though we possess all it takes to produce our own basic amenities, rather we believe in importing goods which were produced from our own exported raw materials.

Nevertheless, one cannot overlook her struggling effort in the health sector of the country as well as our educational system. Nigeria has a very long way to attain development, as its not just all about improving amenities but maintaining these amenities.

A very good example is that of Lagos State, the government set up organization with specific duties, with the aim of spurring up rapid development in the state. Its indeed a very improved step towards a developing country only if other Governors and government officials would work tirelessly towards a better tomorrow.

52 years old Nigeria has very little to show since independence. Instead we are proud of supplying a neighbouring country power, when we at home have a very poor electric supply.

Nigeria’s balance of payment and foreign reserves has not been stable since its independence in 1960. At a time, surplus takes place while at another, deficits occur and this has brought a lot of problems into the country.

On world channels, we keep hearing on various developments, but that is not the news about Nigeria, rather we keep hearing how government officials or ex-government officials are prosecuted for money laundering. Yet an average Nigerian can barely eat three times daily.

The most lucrative venture in Nigeria now is RIGGING OF ELECTIONS, KIDNAPPING, OIL THEFT and any other dubious practice one could imagine. Agriculture which ought to be an area of outmost concentration has now become the poor man’s business, since everyone is after quick oil money.

Despite all odds, Nigeria at this stage at best, can be described as "developing", for its not a day’s job to be develop a country. The leaders have key roles in enhancing development; and the newly elected leaders should, stop the boxing and fighting on going in National Assembly and some other State house of assembies as well, and effect the so called "Change" h Nigerians voted for during the past General elections. I hope Nigerians made the right choice in voting their leaders for they determine the countries tomorrow with the help of God.

If You are not losing friends, then you are not growing.

"If You are not losing friends, then you are not growing." MrJournal, iDon't knw hw true the above statement is, but what iKnw for sure is dis, iam not one to keep a very long list of friends, it's more like when me and you are no longer in the same geo-politcal zone,,, or on the same planet... Well dats when contacting each other starts getting cold.., dis might be a bad habit... Some thing, my bestie from secondary school (jide) complains about... And some times iTry to help the situation by calling and chatting more often... Buh it's not jus me... I and Jay still are good friends oo(or so iThink) buh calling and chatting almost everyday like pple dating, really does not sit well, wif me... Buh that dosen't change the fact that iLove my friends... (Not as much as iLove my pretty lil sis though)... Buh iStill love emm very much sha... U knw when things like watsapp and fb, are erry where... It's now easier to keep in touch, and grow up witout losing friends. *buh how easy is that*, first it was Habib hu started the BMC class of 2010 group on Whatsapp, and now MissRachel invites me to Career class room of 2010... iReally feel honored by their thoughts and gestures... As a matter of fact... It was kingsley that started this watsapp room thing first if u ask me... With friends world, (kings not the most reasonable guy in the world) (buh he's still a good cool fella... Deep down inside).... Lol... So iFeel happily nostalgic when ever am around my hommies frm way back via whatsapp or real life!. Just a few days ago, Obidi's set, class of 2014 english language and literature, Unizik... Wrote their final exams..m which basically meant... They were graduates(in the absence of any carryovers)... They we very happy, pop wine and pure water all over the place... And some of their gurls were screaming like a mad man was fucking them crazy... In the midst of all those craze.. iAnd most of my 300level classmates were taken by thoughts, of hw this time next year, "it would be us" and then it will be all over, coz no matter hw u look at it... The day u write ur last degree exam is the last day u'll see all yuh classmates(both the ones you love and hate) together in one place... Under no circumstance will y'all ever gather together complete in one place again... If u doubt me... Lemme ask u, since ur secondary school graduation party, have u ever seen all ur class mates, or half all ur classmates all in one place at once????... Even in the so called watsapp chat room, we all don't come up at the same time.. Dis is wha am saying... Everybody goes own, doing them self... Making money, falling in love, duping someone, or getting duped, some of us are getting married while some are getting knocked up.. iAin't judging... Am jus saying we all do ourselves.. Differently, we losing friends and making new ones, like a lizard shedding skin! .... Which makes me kinda scared of graduating... Because that might probably the last time I'll see char..or talk to her... Ogunbona... Will no longer be my guy..m he'll be some guy iWent to school wit, Ify, will probably be, in just my memory soon to fade away as days turn into seconds and hours into years!... And all these got me thinking... When in life do we have friend forever?.... Yes! When do we have friends that will last forever... Maybe, just maybe, I've got an answer.... U knw what journal? I think my niggas frm okoko will be my friends for ever(after much thought) thing is, iDont get to choose, buh those guyz... Guzman, UG, MrLiberrty, MrZing... , Mattew, Kings,,, Abbey, Chukwuma.. Segun!!! They are there... Always... When we go out and do us out side.. We still come back to the hood where we call home!... As much as iMight hate to edit the list a little iDont have thet right... iLoveMyNiggas..... #PlsNote.... iDidn't plan any of this... iJus wrote as it came.... If iDidn't mention year name... Then u not on the list. *wink*

Pls note that this piece was written in August2014, jus stumbled on it and thought to share again!

#NoBody'sPerfect Nobody is expected to be.... Buh we all are expected to Grow up!
                                         MrChinyere47 #HBDKingsMan!

Remembering June 12: Full text of Abiola's Epetedo proclamation on June 11, 1994

MKO Abiola

People of Nigeria, exactly one year ago, you turned out in your millions to vote for me, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But politicians in uniform, who call themselves soldiers but are more devious than any civilian would want to be, deprived you of your God-given right to be ruled by the President you had yourselves elected.
These soldier-politicians introduced into our body politic, a concept hitherto unknown to our political lexicography, something strangely called the “annulment” of an election perceived by all to have been the fairest, cleanest and most peaceful ever held in our nation.

Since that abominable act of naked political armed robbery occurred, I have been constantly urged by people of goodwill, both in Nigeria and abroad, to put the matter back into the people’s hands and get them to actualise the mandate they gave me at the polls. But mindful of the need to ensure that peace continues to reign in our fragile federation, I have so far tried to pursue sweet reason and negotiation.

My hope has always been to arouse whatever remnants of patriotism are left in the hearts of these thieves of your mandate, and to persuade them that they should not allow their personal desire to rule to usher our beloved country into an era of political instability and economic ruin.

All I have sought to do, in seeking dialogue with them, has been to try and get them to realise that only real democracy can move our nation forward towards progress, and earn her the respect she deserves from the international community.

However, although this peaceful approach has exposed me to severe censure by some who have mistaken it for weakness on my part, those with whom I have sought to dialogue have remained like stones, neither stirred to show loyalty to the collective decision of the people of their own country, nor to observe Allah’s injunction that they should exhibit justice and fair-play in all their dealings with their fellowmen.

Appeals to their honour as officers and gentlemen of the gallant Nigerian Armed Forces, have fallen on deaf ears. Instead, they have resorted to the tactics of divide and rule, bribery and political perfidy, misinformation and (vile) propaganda. They arrest everyone who disagrees with them. Even the 71-year old hero of our nation, Chief Anthony Enahoro, was not spared. How much longer can we tolerate all this? People of Nigeria, you are all witnesses that I have tried to climb the highest mountain, cross the deepest river and walk the longest mile, in order to get these men to obey the will of our people.

There is no humiliation I have not endured, no snare that has not been put in my path, no “setup” that has not been designed for me in my endeavour to use the path of peace to enforce the mandate that you bestowed on me one year ago. It has been a long night. But the dawn is here.

Today, people of Nigeria, I join you all in saying, “Enough is Enough!” We have endured 24 years of military rule in our 34 years of independence.

Military rule has led to our nation fighting a civil war with itself. Military rule has destabilised our nation today as not before in its history. Military rule has impoverished our people and introduced a dreadful trade in drugs which has made our country’s name an anathema in many parts of the world. Even soccer fans going to watch the Green Eagles display in America are being made to suffer there needlessly because Nigeria’s name is linked with credit card and fraud and “419.” Politically, military rule has torn to shreds the prestige due to our country because of its size and population.

The permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council that should be rightfully ours, is all but lost. For who will vote for Nigeria to get the seat if Nigerian military rulers do not respect the votes of their own people?

Enough of military rule. We are sickened to see people who have shown little or no personal achievement, either in building up private businesses, or making success of any tangible thing, being placed in charge of the management of our nation’s economy, by rulers who are not accountable to anyone.

Enough of square pegs in round holes. We are tired of then military repetitive tendency to experiment with our economy: Today, they say “no controls.” Tomorrow; they say “Full controls”. The day after, they say “Fine tuning”.

The next day, they say “Devaluation.” A few days later, they say “Revalue the same naira upwards again Abi?” All we can see are the consequences of this permanent game of military “about turns;” high inflation, a huge budget deficit and an enormous foreign debt repayment burden, dying industries, high unemployment and a demoralised populace.

Our youths, in particular, can see no hope on the horizon, and many can only dream of escaping from our shores to join the brain drain. Is this the Nigeria we want? We are plagued also by periodic balance of payments crises, which have led to a perennial shortage of essential drugs that has turned our hospitals and clinics into mortuaries.

A scarcity of books and equipment has rendered our schools into desolate deserts of ignorance. Our factories are crying for machinery, spare parts and raw materials. But each day that passes, instead of these economic diseases being cured, they are rather strengthened as an irrational allocation of foreign exchange based on favouritism and corruption becomes the order of the day.

Enough is enough of economic mismanagement! People of Nigeria, during the election campaign last year, I presented you with a programme entitled “HOPE ’93. This programme was aimed precisely at solving these economic (problems) that have demoralised us all. I toured every part of Nigeria to present this programme to you the electorate. I was questioned on it at public rallies and press conferences and I had the privilege of incorporating into it much of the feedback that I obtained from the people.

Because you knew I would not only listen to you but deliver superb results from the programme, you voted for me in your millions and gave me an overwhelming majority over my opponent. To be precise, you gave me 58.4 per cent of the popular vote and a majority in 20 out of 30 states plus the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Not only that, you also enabled me to fulfil the constitutional requirement that the winner should obtain one-third of the votes in two-thirds of the states.

I am sure that when you cast an eye on the moribund state of Nigeria today, you ask yourselves: “What have we done to deserve this, when we have a president- elect who can lead a government that can change things for the better? Our patience has come to an end.

As of now, from this moment, a new Government of National Unity is in power throughout the length and breadth of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, led by me, Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, as President and Commander-in-Chief. The National Assembly is hereby reconvened. All dismissed governors are reinstated.

The State Assemblies are reconstituted, as are all local government councils. I urge them to adopt a bi-partisan approach to all the issues that come before them. At the national level, a bi-partisan approach will be our guiding principle. I call upon the usurper, General Sani Abacha, to announce his resignation forthwith, together with the rest of his illegal ruling council. We are prepared to enter into negotiations with them to work out the mechanics for a smooth transfer of power.

I pledge that if they hand over quietly, they will be retired with all their entitlements, and their positions will be accorded all the respect due to them. For our objective is neither recrimination nor witch-hunting, but an enforcement of the will of the Nigerian people, as expressed in free elections conducted by the duly constituted authority of the time.

I hereby invoke the mandate bestowed upon me by my victory in the said election, to call on all members of the Armed Forces and the Police, the Civil and Public Services throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to obey only the Government of National Unity that is headed by me, your only elected President.

My Government of National Unity is the only legitimate, constituted authority in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as of now. People of Nigeria, these are challenging times in the history of our continent, Africa, and we in Nigeria must not allow ourselves to be left behind. Our struggle is the same as that waged by the people of South Africa, which has been successfully concluded, with the inauguration of Mr. Nelson Mandela as the first African President of that country.

Nelson Mandela fought to replace MINORITY rule with MAJORITY rule. We in Nigeria are also fighting to replace MINORITY rule, for we are ruled by only a tiny section of our armed forces. Like the South Africans, we want MAJORITY rule today, that is rule only by those chosen by all the people of Nigeria as a whole in free and fair elections.

The only difference between South Africa and Nigeria is that those who imposed minority rule on the majority rule whether it is by black or white, remains minority rule, and must be booted out. I call on you, heroic people of Nigeria, to emulate the actions of your brothers and sisters in South Africa and stand up as one person to throw away the yoke of minority rule for ever.

The antics of every minority that oppresses the majority are always the same. They will try to intimidate you with threats of police action. But do not let us fear arrest. In South Africa, so many people were arrested, during the campaign against the Pass Laws, for instance, that the jails could not hold all of them. Today, apartheid is gone forever.

So, let it be with Nigeria. Let us say goodbye forever to minority rule by the military. They talk of treason. But haven’t they heard of the Rivonia treason trial in South Africa? Did those treason trials halt the march of history? People of Nigeria, our time is now. You are the repository of power in the land.

No one can give you power. It is yours. Take it! From this day, show to the world that anyone who takes the people of Nigeria for fools is deceiving himself and will have the people to answer to. God bless you all. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live the Government of National Unity.
